a lecture performance by EMILY SCHWARZWALD
When We Play: Queer BDSM*
After showing beautiful, strong and occasionally funny examples of (public) expressions of QueerLesbianWomenTrans SM culture of the last thirty years, Emily Schwarzwald is going to present her interviews with current community members, accompanied with selected images of their personal styles. The interviewees were asked how is gender or sexuality reflected in their ‘outer’ BDSM style, what are their favourite BDSM styles and whether or not their social realities (class affiliation) affect their BDSM personas, styles and scene.

* The acronym “BDSM” is used as an umbrella term for consensual Bondage and/or Discipline and/or Dominance and/or Submission and/or Masochism, including certain fetishisms. The term “QueerLesbianWomanTrans BDSM subculture” (or in short “queer BDSM”) allows us to capture the specificity of lesbian-centered and queer BDSM in feminist-lesbian contexts of the late 1970’s, 1980’s and 1990’s.
